About This Spot

Stepping into Khartoum Halal Bakkal is like entering a humble crossroads of cultures nestled in the heart of Washington, DC’s 18th Street neighborhood. The moment you push open the door, you’re greeted by a gentle buzz—a quiet energy of discovery mixed with the familiar hum of day-to-day life. It’s a small space, intimate and a little labyrinthine, where every aisle feels like a treasure hunt wrapped in the warmth of a welcoming smile.

The pace here is unhurried, inviting you to slow down and explore. Shelves lined with spices, teas, and lentils from North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia create a tapestry of aromas and colors that hint at stories from afar. You might find yourself lingering over jars of rare date bars or pausing to examine imported olive oils, each with its own distinct character and origin.

What truly colors the experience is the owner’s approachable presence, making the shop feel less like a commercial stop and more like a neighbor’s kitchen pantry—overflowing with possibilities and personal touches. While the layout can feel a bit improvised, it adds to the charm; this is a place where the organized chaos quietly speaks of countless hands unpacking, arranging, and sharing pieces of their heritage.

Beyond the fragrant spices and pantry staples, you’ll discover frozen delights, dairy, and even praying rugs and incense—reminders that this bakkal serves as a gentle bridge between everyday needs and cultural connections. It’s the kind of spot where your visit can be as simple as grabbing a familiar item or as immersive as letting curiosity guide you through unfamiliar flavors and textures.

Khartoum Halal Bakkal is a modest sanctuary where authenticity is quietly preserved in every jar and every conversation. It’s a place to find a sense of belonging, whether you’re reconnecting with roots or charting new culinary paths through the humble art of grocery shopping.

Very nice and courteous owner, the place is small but you bet you can find almost anything you want. I found Deemah date bars which are very rare to find.

Store is insanely disorganized, but the owner is very friendly & the store has a wide range of items (spices, snacks, teas, lentils & etc) straight from North Africa & India. Despite seeing the other reviews, the prices aren't too bad for DC! Also, the owner encouraged me to purchase some baobab powder, only for me to get home, open it, and see that it was moldy and had expired back in February. Look at expiration dates before purchasing stuff here!

Lovely store! I have been going to this place for over a year already. They have a big variety of products (from bread, condiments, dairy, spices, meat, dates, sweets, praying rugs, incense, frozen doughs and veggies...etc!) (they even sell Palestinian olive oil!! sometimes Lebanese or Tunisian too) pretty much everything! They even have some specific spices or other products that aren't easy to find even back home! It's mainly an Arab products store, but you can also find Turkish, Persian, Pakistani and Indian stuff here too. The shelves are packed with products kind of randomly, which makes it very authentic (typical middle eastern store!:)) The lamb they have is frozen (which for obvious reasons makes sense) and the quality is very good! They always have fresh nice pita bread both thin and thick, big and small, which you can't find in any other chain stores that sell pita that smells like preservatives. It's a family business, sometimes the father is there, sometimes the son. They're very friendly and lovely people. Never had an issue with their products! Prices of some products sometimes can be a bit higher than you would expect, but COME ON! BE THANKFUL that you can find these products to your comfort in the HEART OF DC! As a regular customer, I don't understand the negative reviews mentioned below, and would definitely recommend this store.
